Adult Literacy XPRIZE
Transforming lives through literacy
In the United States, more than 36 million adults lack basic English literacy skills.
Join a worldwide effort to address low literacy by becoming an Adult Literacy XPRIZE Volunteer! Dallas is one of three cities participating in a field test of an innovative, technology–driven initiative to help adult learners improve literacy skills - anytime, anywhere. VolunteerNow is partnering with the Barbara Bush Foundation Adult Literacy XPRIZE, Points of Light Foundation and the Dallas County Community College District to recruit volunteers in support of this initiative that aims to increase basic literacy skills of adults in just one year through free mobile learning applications.
What is Adult Literacy XPRIZE?
The Barbara Bush Foundation Adult Literacy XPRIZE, presented by Dollar General Literacy Foundation, is a global competition to transform the lives of low-literate adults by creating mobile literacy learning applications that will result in the greatest increase in literacy skills among participating adult learners in just 12 months. The solutions will overcome key barriers to literacy learning and bring about greater equality, a boost in earning power, lower unemployment, and promote healthy living among low literate adults. The vision is to empower nearly 1 in 6 low-literate adults living in the U.S. with the skills they need to improve their lives and realize their dreams. For more about the competition, click here.
Field testing of proposed mobile literacy learning solutions is taking place in three major metropolitan areas — Dallas, Los Angeles and Philadelphia. XPRIZE and its local partners in each metropolitan region will administer standardized literacy assessments to adult learners to determine eligibility and pre-intervention scores.
